The Retirement of MatPat

Matthew Patrick, otherwise known as MatPat, has decided to step down from YouTube and pursue other creative endeavors using a video, but what was actually said in it?

On January 9th, 2024, MatPat made a video titled “Goodbye Internet”, in which he talks about him leaving his 4 channels that have amassed almost 40 million subscribers (Style Theory, Game Theory, Film Theory, and Food Theory) and putting it into the hands of the other creative directors.

However, this isn’t him leaving the website entirely. He will still be in the background, making scripts and helping around where he can- he just won’t be the voice of these channels anymore. He also explained that he will still be in more future videos, but these are acting more as a goodbye to the audience. His final episode will take place on March 8th, 2024. His presence in a spinoff channel by the name of GT Live will still be active for the next few months. However, the fate of that channel afterwards is questionable.

MatPat also expressed his interest in making more creative projects, such as a Lofi ARG which he has, at least to my understanding, started to work on. He also teased future projects he hopes to become reality, but he didn’t give more information about it.

MatPat’s retirement isn’t an isolated event, as he alluded to in his video. Tom Scott, Seth Evermens, CaptainSparklez and many other YouTubers have started to drop from the website. Common reasons for this, according to their videos, have been them needing more time to focus on their families, looking into other creative outlets, or just not enjoying making content anymore.

When MatPat does leave the theory channels and goes off doing his own wonderful things, just remember, it’s just his leaving theories. Thanks for reading.
