It is officially “love season” again, and another month of heart-shaped chocolates, teddy bears, and more PDA in the halls than usual. Throughout the years, my opinion of Valentines has changed drastically. In elementary school, I loved Valentine’s Day. Although, that was back when you would make boxes to receive cute notes and cards, dress festive, and everyone would celebrate the holiday just by showing how much they cared about each other. As we get older it focuses on more romantic love and if you’re single, it can be a slap in the face.
With age, I realized how completely pathetic this cheesy holiday is. Why show an immense amount of love just for one day, and why not be that affectionate to your significant other all the time? I am not saying to buy them a box of chocolate everyday, but you shouldn’t give them more love that one day just because society says so. This is just a day for companies to sell an influx of chocolates and roses.
But, the little things always matter. Throughout the year, date nights should be prioritized, and flowers for nothing should be given. The affection in a relationship or friendship should be shown over the course of 365 days, and not just on February 14th.
Now, I understand why people would like the holiday so much. It’s fun to look forward to something, dressing up nice, going out to a fancy restaurant, or maybe just wearing pink. I do like the good vibes throughout the month of February, but it has gotten so exaggerated over the years.
All in all, yes it’s a cute holiday, but Valentine’s Day is not for me. But you will definitely catch me wearing pink and having a festive pink coffee from Dutch Bros in my hand this Valentines Day
