First Favorite Movies Are Easy, But Second Favorite is a Little More Challenging

My Secondish Favorite Movie

Emily Eigenbrode

When people ask me, Emily, what’s your favorite movie? , It’s always been an easy question. But my second favorite movie is a little harder. For me, I’ve never really had a second favorite movie because it’s only ever been Just Go With It. But I do have some favorites, so although it might not be my second favorite it is up there with some of my favorite movies.

Movie Summary-

Therefore, one of my favorite movies would have to be the Devil Wears Prada. The Devil Wears Prada stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt as the main characters. Andy, the main character played by Hathaway, is a very driven girl as she wants to work at a reputable news station as an editor. However, she finds herself working at runway magazine as the assistant to the editor in chief Miranda, who is an absolute nightmare. Miranda played by Streep is a horrific boss as she generally fires people within the first few days of them working. Andy tries desperately to keep her job and works very hard to do so. Because of this, she gets to go on many experiences but she also faces many challenges while working at Runway. One challenge she faced included trying to find a first edition unreleased Harry Potter Book. This seemed like an impossible task but it was actually possible due to Andy’s power to not give up. After a short while, Andy is also given more privileges like handling “the book.” The book is only handled by people Miranda trusts so when Andy gets this privilege it is a big step in her career for her. While delivering the book for the first time she makes a mistake and talks to Miranda’s children after being told not to. She ultimately gets in trouble for her actions but not enough to where she is fired. While she is working in the fashion industry, she goes through some personal problems. The fashion industry is a very hard profession to work in as the hours are insanely long and it really takes a hardworking and persistent person to do the job. Since she is spending so much time at her job she loses focus on her boyfriend and in return doesn’t spend as much time with him. Not only does she spend less time with him but she also changes her personality to fit in with people she works with. This causes her boyfriend to start to lose feelings for her and her life starts to go into a semi downhill spiral. Before the end of the movie, Andy gets some intel that Miranda’s job is at risk and she will no longer be the Editor-in-chief. This frightens Andy and she ultimately realizes that the fashion industry has caused her more harm than good and that she is going to step down from her position.

Why I Love This Movie-

After that very long synopsis of the film, I think I should explain why I love this movie so much. The first time I saw this movie, I was around 10 years old. I was just scrolling through the TV one day and I found this movie with a very interesting title. I read The Devil Wears Prada and I immediately thought “wow that movie must be crazy, the devil is wearing prada.” Let’s just say I took the movie title a little too literally. Shortly into the movie, I realized it was in fact Miranda who was wearing Prada not the Devil. But she is kind of the Devil so it makes sense. But after I finished the movie, I became completely engulfed with it. I would watch it again and again. This was the movie for me that really made me love fashion and want to do it myself. And you’re probably thinking Emily, after hearing about how awful the fashion industry is in this movie, “why would you want to do something like that?” And the answer is, although it is a very challenging industry you get to experience so many cool things within it like fashion shows, meeting designers, making your own clothes, etc. All of those things I mentioned are like a dream to me and something I really want to do. Without this movie, I dont really know if I would have found my love for fashion.

It Sends a Good Message-

Not only do I like this movie because it helped me decide what I really want to do, but I also like it for the message it sends. In the opening scene of the movie, there is a montage where it shows all the girls and Andy getting ready. There is a stark contrast between the rest of the girls and Andy, as Andy is seen as more unfashionable than the rest. She is portrayed as different compared to everyone else in the movie, but she still tries to remain herself, even though she goes through constant ridicule. Andy does go through moments where she does not be herself but in the end, she always remains true to who she is, which I really love about the story.

The Fashion is Amazing-

I also love the different kinds of fashion portrayed in the movie. I loved seeing all of the dresses, shoes, jewelry, tops, pants, etc. A fun fact for you guys is that The Devil Wears Prada had an insane budget for clothing. Throughout the movie they were wearing designers like Prada, Gucci, Chanel, etc. therefore, it makes sense that they needed a budget over one million for just clothes. The fashion is absolutely impeccable in this movie.

In the end, if you love fashion or are interested in the fashion industry I think this is the movie for you. This movie does a great job showing the triumphs and challenges of the fashion industry. And like I said before, this movie really helped me understand what I want to do in the future which is why this movie means so much to me. If I had to give it a rating, I think I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars. What are your favorite movies?
