On May 4th, 2022 we were blessed with the second trailer for the Obi-Wan Kenobi show that will be streaming on Disney+ starting May 27th. In this trailer we caught glimpses of more parts of the show than was revealed in the first trailer and fans are more excited than ever for the show to come out. As well as the new trailer, there have been a couple of interviews with Ewan Mcgregor, the actor for Obi-Wan, who gave his thoughts on some of the things about the show that give more insight into his thoughts and also into the show.

For some context with where the show falls in the Star Wars timeline, it takes place ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. This means it’s been ten years since Anakin Skywalker made his transformation to Darth Vader, the Skywalker twins were born, and Obi-Wan ran away to Tatooine to keep an eye on Luke. This is also five years before the show Rebels takes place but takes place at the same time as the Star Wars book A New Dawn which is a prequel to the animated show Rebels. The saddest part though is by this point Anakin and Obi-Wan’s friendship is all but destroyed.

Although Anakin and Obi-Wan lost their friendship, the actors, Ewan Mcgregor and Hadyn Christianson, are still great friends. Ewan Mcgregor said in a recent interview, “To see Hayden back in the role of Anakin, well, it was sort of spine-tingling. It was amazing. It was just amazing to see Hayden, full stop…I’m so close with him, we’ve stayed in touch over the years, but we haven’t seen each other for a long time … We had this long catch up. It was so lovely. It just had been years since we actually saw each other. Not for any reason other than just locations … but I love him so much. We have a very special bond of making two of those first three films together.” It’s incredible to hear that after a large amount of time these two good friends were reunited to make another amazing masterpiece together!

Speaking of interviews with Ewan Mcgregor, he has had several over the past couple months. In another interview he said, in regards to the show itself, “I think it’s no secret that Hayden Christensen comes back and we got to play scenes together again as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker and it was just fantastic to work with him again. I’m not going to give away anything else about the storyline, only I think it’s really going to satisfy Star Wars fans. I always felt there was a story between Episode III where I finished playing Obi-Wan in the movies and Episode IV where Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi. The [Obi-Wan Kenobi series] writers and Deb and I and everyone, I think we crafted or they crafted a very fine storyline. I think people are going to like it.” This reveals more than I think some realize. We knew Hadyn Christianson was playing Vader but the fact that he played Anakin Skywalker as well implies heavily we will probably be seeing flashbacks to the Clone Wars. It’s also said that fans will be satisfied and I don’t think that Ewan Mcgregor was wrong in thinking that. Fans love Kenobi and I think they will definitely love this show.

Now, back to the trailer. In the trailer it shows a scene between Obi-Wan and Owen Lars where Obi-Wan says he has to train Luke and Owen shoots back with “like you trained his father”. This is a direct parallel to a scene from the comic Star Wars #15 where Owen accused Obi-Wan of being the reason Anakin died. (He is unaware Anakin became Vader). It will be interesting in the show to see how many different parallels there will be between the comics and the Kenobi book.

There wasn’t too much new information revealed in the trailer that wasn’t already in the original trailer but the things shown definitely help hype everyone up for when the show releases. It’ll definitely be an anxious wait until the 27th but we must stay patient, and until then may the force be with you.
