JACK THE RIPPER

JACK THE RIPPER

Giuliana Carmosino

Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer who was active in areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London around 1888, with a record killing only 5 women. All of these women who were killed by this famous serial killer were all prostitutes between the months of August and November in the year 1888. Since we look at Jack the Ripper as such a terrible and well known killer even though he only killed 5 people, let’s take a look at why he is seen as so bad, as compared to other killers who had a higher number of kills.

History

Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in the history of English crime. It is documented that he had brutally murdered 5 females. These including Mary Ann Nichols (found August 31, 1888), Annie Chapman (found September 8, 1888), Elizabeth Stride (found September 30, 1888), Catherine Eddowes (also found September 30, 1888), and Mary      Jane Kelly (found November 9, 1888). All of these women were prostitutes and they were all found with mutilated corpses. He commited all of his documented murders within miles of each other. All but one of his victims were murdered while soliciting customers on the street. In each of his victims the throat had been cut, and the body had been mutilated in a way in which the murderer had to have some knowledge of human anatomy.  The authorities also received a series of taunting notes from a person calling himself Jack the Ripper and purporting to be the murderer. Many efforts were put forward in efforts to catch The Ripper. At one point there was half of a human kidney that was mailed to the police station that was thought to have been from a victim of The Rippers. A great public uproar over the failure to arrest the murderer was raised against the home secretary and the London police commissioner, who resigned soon afterward.

Copycats

There have been many incidents in which people seem to have been so intrigued with Jack the Ripper, that they have wanted to recreate his murders. Copycat murderers are very common in well known serial killers, and Jack the Ripper was one of them. Derek Brown, a 47-year-old-father of seven, followed in the footsteps of Jack the Ripper. In 2008, Brown was convicted of murdering two women in which both cases  the bodies were not found. Brown picked his victims from the Whitechapel area of East London, where Jack the Ripper had carried out his five murders. In August, Brown murdered Xiao Mei Guo, a 29-year-old street vendor; the following month, Brown picked up 26-year-old prostitute Bonnie Barrett and murdered her. Police had found ample blood evidence linking the murders back to Brown, in which the highest blood content was found in Derek Brown’s bathroom. This was jsut the main copycat murder known to date of the mysterious Jack The Ripper, however there were a handful more who .wanted to follow in the footsteps of their favorite murderers.

Conclusion

In conclusion we can see that Jack The Ripper was a very mysterious person and killer and he/she will never be revealed, however he will always be a part of London and his secrets and murders will lie in the streets of the Whitechapel district in London England. Some may never know or be able to uncover how many people The Ripper got his hands on, and who knows how many people walked past him in the streets of London. Still to this day Jack the Ripper will live on as one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in the history of English crime, and will be continued to be talked about today.
