The Infamous Joy-Con Drift

Erika Lewis

Imagine you’re playing Mario on your Nintendo Switch and you are almost done with a tricky level. You let go of the joystick to plan your next move when suddenly Mario turns and strolls off the edge all on his own. Is it a ghost haunting your game? No worries, Mario wasn’t possessed; you just experienced what several people have experienced, the infamous Joy-Con drift.

Ever since the Nintendo Switch came out in early 2017 plays have been experiencing the Joy-Con drift. It’s insane that three years later this issue still hasn’t been corrected. This problem affects the joysticks, they register directional input even when nobody is touching the device. The Joy-Con drifting has been affecting players for so long and the problem is so widespread that many are upset with Nintendo for releasing a device with such a flaw. Because of this Nintendo has run into several legal problems.

In July Law Firm Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith filed a lawsuit against Nintendo. Their complaint alleges that Nintendo marketed and Sold the Switch in spite of being aware of the Joy-Con drifting problem. One of the Lawyers working this case said “This drift issue simply prevents consumers from playing games in the way they are supposed to be able to on this device. It is extremely frustrating and I can understand why so many people are upset. We look forward to prosecuting this case.” With all this legal stuff what has Nintendo decided to do?

After Nintendo ran into several legal issues they agreed to fix any Switch that was sent to them for free. Although Nintendo didn’t want to do this, they only did it because of the legal issues. The people of Nintendo have stated several times that the drifting “isn’t a real problem” and it “hasn’t caused anyone any inconvenience”. Looping back to the claim made against Nintendo in the legal case, “Nintendo marketed and Sold the Switch in spite of being aware of the Joy-Con drifting problem.” It is quite shocking to people that Nintendo would have pulled something like this. Nintendo said “At Nintendo, we take great pride in creating quality products and we are continuously making improvements to them. We want our consumers to have fun with Nintendo Switch, and if anything falls short of this goal we always encourage them to visit http://support.nintendo.com so we can help.”

There are tons of conspiracies that Nintendo was aware of the Joy-Con drift. After all isn’t it a wonderful idea to have the device be defective so people pay you more money to fix it? Nintendo hasn’t admitted to knowing that there was something wrong with their game consoles and they continue to resist even slightly. They did release a “new” switch that didn’t have the problem but that turned out to also be false.

Despite everything Nintendo has done the problem still hasn’t been resolved. Hopefully they will get their head in the game and get things sorted out because players are sick of watching Mario stroll off edges.
