An Update on the Rapidly Approaching Soccer Season

The Colorado Rapids started off their year by setting a record in their first game. Major League Soccer kicked off March 2nd, and it was one for the books.

The Rapids were lucky enough to start the year off in front of their home crowd, but early March in Colorado is not always pleasant. Colorado fans filled the bleachers, despite it being 18 degrees at kick off. This is the coldest recorded match in league history.

On Instagram, the Colorado Rapids posted pictures of the ball sliding through snow, players sliding on the field, and a close-up of the referee with frozen facial hair. It made sports headlines, as people could not believe people were crazy enough to play (or even watch) soccer in that kind of weather.

However, the weather was not the only exciting aspect of the home-opener. The match ended in a 3-3 tie after the Rapids scored in the fourth minute of stoppage to even up the game against the Portland Timbers.

Since the opening, the Rapids have lost to the Seattle Sounders, 2-0 and tied Kansas City Sporting, 1-1.

However, this shouldn’t discourage fans. The young team is only three games into the year and have plenty of hope. They will have many upcoming games at their home stadium, Dick’s Sporting Goods Field, in Commerce City.

This is a good year to get invested in the world of soccer because it is the last year of Rapids’ goalie, Tim Howard’s, career. He is a very talented player who has played for Manchester United and the United States National Team.

Many young soccer fans look up to Howard and getting to see him play live is unreal. His retirement will definitely be heartbreaking but luckily fans still have the chance to see him a couple more times before it’s all over, and maybe even see a championship at the end of the season.

Along with the start of baseball season and hockey season headed to the playoffs, sports fans are in for quite a ride for the next couple of months.
