Are the New Advancements Too Convenient?

In recent years, the United States has become a place of convenience. Other countries tend to associate ours with the words “easy,” “advantageous,” and “convenient”— and that is completely true, due to all of our technological advancements.

In the past, such convenience may have not been the case. However, in this day and age, everything is done for us. When hunger starts to fess up but you don’t feel like leaving the house, all you have to do is get an Uber Eats driver to bring you dinner.

There are countless businesses for this too— such as Postmates, Seamless, Grubhub, Doordash, Foodler, etc.

It is not only food delivery apps that have made things too convenient— even grocery stores have created a new way of food pick up. All you have to do is go online and order your items, then an employee will gather your groceries for you and bring them straight to your car.

The fast food industry has also boomed. According to Statista, the fast food industry is worth approximately 198.8 billion U.S dollars. Home cooked meals are a rare thing in this generation, and the likelihood of a comeback is slim.

Reese Foster, sophomore, stated, “I eat fast food every day, and I know it is affecting my health in a negative way— but I do it anyways.”

Keira Stueven, sophomore, said, “I probably eat fast food four nights a week, and I know that I would be so much healthier if I didn’t eat out as much.”

In our country, things are simply handed to us— and it is going to have a great impact in the future. As of 2015, 18.5% of children and nearly 40% of adults were reported obese, according to the National Obesity Rates and Trends. These reports are likely heavily impacted by the level of convenience in the U.S.

Between technology, fast food, and new advancements that make our lives even easier, society is too expedient.

Though it is nice having things come easy, the laziness needs to be kicked out. If there is not a shift in our upcoming convenience, the future of this country will only go downhill from here.
