Throw Out These Bad Habits

Students lack of maintaining a clean school

Jaden Marolt, Event Coordinator

It is not hard to see the build up of trash in Horizon’s student parking lot. Everyday, students sit in their cars and throw trash out the windows whenever they see it necessary.

A few extra steps to the trash can will not hurt– yet, people continuously refuse because it is much easier to throw it on the ground.

When asked how waste affects Horizon, students have a lot to say.

“All the litter in the parking lot makes our school look trashy,” Alli Quintana (sophomore) says.

Trash that is built up and scattered all around destroys both the appearance of Horizon and the environment.

Waste damages the areas we live in, along with putting forth a threat to our clean water sources.

When litter gets into the water system, it naturally pollutes– not only that, but it then has the potential of causing harm to the public’s health, according to the Education of Seattle PI.

“Students littering is a constant thing. Sometimes I even witness students tossing trash out of their vehicles right in front of me,” Shawn Houston, janitor, says.

This issue occurs on the daily, and the level of disrespect from students has to stop. Janitors already work very hard to keep our school clean, and littering in the parking lot is not making their job any easier.

We should be trying to make their workload as minimal as possible, considering all they do for us. Nevertheless, students are doing just the opposite and creating unnecessary labor.

“Do your part, and help us out!” Houston states.

If everyone would pitch in and do their part, things would work much more efficiently– and Horizon would look significantly nicer.

There are trash cans placed all around the school, and even in some parts of the parking lot. Take advantage of them by cleaning up after yourself.

From an unpleasing appearance to a great load of unneeded work, students littering in and around the school have no benefits other than holding back from an extra five or six steps; that is, of course, if you see it as a benefit.

If students would help take care of our school, it would be much appreciated by staff and others as well.
