Did you know that there is a day representing Saint Joseph? 

St. Joseph’s Day or also known as the Feast of Saint Joseph is observed on March 19th. In Western Christianity, this is the major feast day of Saint Joseph. Has the rank of solemnity in the Catholic church. This day is for honoring Saint Joseph and all his accomplishments. 

Saint Joseph was a Jewish man of Nazareth, the Son of David, Husband of the Virgin Mary. Joseph is the legal father of Jesus Christ. He is considered a model of a loyal and devout father. In the Bible, Saint Joseph’s mission is a part of the plan of salvation. 

According to some legends, Saint Joseph interceded to relieve a famine in Sicily during the Middle Ages. During that time, a severe drought had occurred. People prayed to their patron saint to bring them rain. By the 1500s, the Feast Day became the official practice of the church. 

Saint Joseph’s Day holds a lot of traditions and celebrations around the world to honor Joseph. Such traditions as attending mass or the Divine Service, wearing red clothing, carrying dried fava beans that have been blessed, and assembling home altars that are dedicated to Saint Joseph. Inside homes, a table is set with symbolic breads and pastries, and a basket for prayer petitions. 

In Italy, Saint Joseph’s Day is a day that celebrates Father’s Day. In Sicily, Saint Joseph’s Day is celebrated with triple-tiered altars, tables with food, and offerings of candles, sweets, and flowers. In Europe, this day is celebrated as a meatless feast.
