Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He became famous in the 1950s and 1960s, mostly for leading the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s. He believed in fighting against racism in more peaceful ways without using any violence. One of his most famous moments was when he was giving the “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963, where he had talked about his vision for a world where people are judged by their own character, not just the color of their skin. Sadly, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, but his message of peace still lives on today.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is much more than just a day off from school. It is a time to remember his important work that he had done for civil rights and equality at the time. Martin Luther king Jr. day was made a national holiday in 1983, and it has been celebrated every year since. The day is also more of an opportunity for people to get more involved in their communities and continue working toward justice for years to come.
Martin Luther King Jr. had a great impact on a large number of people in the U.S., as over 250,000 U.S. citizens witnessed his “I Have a Dream” speech on August 28th, of 1963. Because of Martin Luther King Jr.’s work, laws were passed to protect people from different discrimination. Like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which banned unfair treatment based on race, religion, and gender in public environments. Also, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited racial discrimination while voting and that also had an effect on how African Americans would be more involved in America.
His approach to peaceful protest inspired many other leaders and movements around the world at the time. His ideas helped the fight against apartheid in South Africa and also would inspire the BLM movement today. His belief in nonviolent protests showed that people can promote change without rioting and acting scandalously.
Martin Luther King Jr. wanted a world where people, no matter their race or background, could live together in tranquility. Even though racism is still a problem in some parts of society today, Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of unity and respect for others continues to have a positive effect on society today.
Schools around America teach about the effect Martin Luther King Jr. had on the world and how one person can do so much for a large number of people and be successful at conveying an idea of how we can work towards a more peaceful era of life. I think Martin Luther King Jr. was not successful in fulfilling his dream in his time on the earth, I do believe we will achieve his dream of peace, not too far into the future.
