With the Denver Broncos win on Sunday January 5th,against the Kansas City Chiefs backups. The Broncos have grabbed playoff spot for the first time since the year 2015. And with it being 10 years since that then it got me wondering what some of the biggest trends were at that time. For reference I was in 3rd grade during this year, so it will definitely be interesting to see.
Let’s start with the entertainment side of things. According to billboard, the number 1 song in 2015 was “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson Featuring Bruno Mar., rounding out the rest of the top 5 was “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, “See You Again”by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth, “Trap Queen” By Fetty Wap, and “Sugar” by Maroon 5. The honor of the highest grossing movie of the year belongs to Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossing a staggering 2 billion dollars world wide. Making Money would be a trend for Disney as they had 3 of the top 10 highest grossing movies including Avengers: Age of Ultron. It was also a strong year at the box offices for Universal who also had three of the highest grossing movies of the year with Minions, Furious 7, and Jurassic World. However, not every movie can gross a billion dollars and 2015 featured quite a few duds at the box office. some of the biggest flops include Fox’s Fantastic 4 with a budget of 125 Million, it failed to even gross 200 million worldwide and lost Fox 100 million dollars in the process. Some other big flops where Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur losing 85 million, Tommorowland losing 150 Million and Pan also losing 150 million dollars.
Now, we dive into the world of sports. The NFL was just about to enter the playoffs at the turn of 2016 and the year of 2015 had no shortage of drama, as the Carolina Panthers led by her young superstar quarterback Cam Newton where dominating teams week in and week out in the NFC while in the NFC the Denver Broncos and their stifling defense where terrorizing offenses in the AFC. These teams would go on to meet in the Super Bowl in early 2016. In hockey, the Chicago Blackhawks were coming off winning their 3rd Stanley Cup since 2010 led by superstars Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith. In the MLB, the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Mets in 5 games in that year’s World Series giving the Royals their second ever World Series as Salvador Perez would win World Series MVP. Finally, in basketball the Golden State Warriors led by Stephen Curry would defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers in 6 games, the cavs would actually take a 2-1 series lead over the Warriors before they would come storming back winning the next three to give the title.
2015 was a wild year for people everywhere, and we can only hope that 2025 can bring as many memories and notable moments as its decade old counterpart.
