When you hear about a tea party, you may think of a sit down table- all dressed up drinking tea. Well, this tea party is not all you think. This tea party is an historic event in the United States.
The Boston Tea Party was an American political and mercantile protest on December 16, 1773. By the Sons of Liberty in Boston, the goal was to protest British Parliament tax on tea.
No taxation without representation.
30 to 130 men boarded 3 ships on the Boston Harbor. The demonstrators opened 342 chests of tea, then threw them overboard. Governor Thomas Hutchinson condemned this act of treason.
This became a central event in the American Revolution. On May 10, 1775, Great Britain introduced the Tea Act as a way to reassert itself as the governing authority of the American colonies. The Tea Act allowed the company to reduce costs by selling producers directly to colonists. This act outraged the colonists. Reducing the massive amount of tea held by the financially troubled British East India company in a London warehouse.
The Boston Tea Party is an important event in history. Rarely talked about but should be more spoken about because of the significance it has in our history.
