Did you know every month has its own full moon? December’s full moon is the “Full Cold Moon”.
Also known as the “Longest Night Moon” for it rises close to the longest day of the year. The name for that is Winter Solstice, on December 21st. Winter Solstice marks the moment when half of Earth is titled the farthest away from the sun. This moon rises just in time for winter’s cold conditions, hence the “cold” moon.
Cold Moon was named after the Mohican People. The Mochican people are an Eastern Algonquain Native American tribe. In Europe, ancient pagans called it “Moon Before Yule”, in honor of the Yuletide Festival. In other words, a Christmas Festival.
While December has two full moons, the Cold Moon will appear on December 14th of this year. Rising over the mountains, the moon will be 100% illuminated on December 15th at 4:02AM (EST). The view will be more visible in the Northern Hemisphere. Also, during the night of the Cold Moon, 4 planets will be spotted as well. Venus will be seen West, Saturn will be seen South, and Jupiter and Mars will be seen East.
The Full Cold Moon will be a beautiful sight to witness. Remember to dress warm and bring out your telescope.
