It’s here! The day I have been waiting and dreading for a long time now. I am finally turning 18. It’s exciting but scary at the same time because of all the privileges but responsibilities that come with it. I will be turning 18 on October 18th, making this my Golden Birthday.
I am very excited for my birthday to be here. I have my whole weekend planned since it’s on a Friday. On Friday, I will wake up early to drive down to Arvada to get my tattoo at 9 am. This is going to be my first tattoo without a guardian signature and my first 5 hour long tattoo. After that, I will head home to get changed for the football game at 7 pm. I have to be at the stadium at 5:30 pm which puts me close. That’s my whole plan for the day of my birthday. On Saturday, I will wake up early again to drive down to Aurora for the freshman and jv football games. I won’t head back home until 3 pm but with the traffic, I won’t be back at my house until 4 pm. After the games, I will go home to get ready for my birthday dinner with my girls. Everyone will meet at my house at 5:30 pm then we will drive down to Cheesecake Factory in Littleton. After dinner, we will go back to my house and go to sleep. On Sunday, my friends, family, and I will go to early morning bingo. After bingo, my brother and I will exchange our gifts with each other. Then, we will head out for our family birthday dinner. That’s basically my whole birthday weekend planned. Nothing too big for my 18th, just spending time with friends and family.
As for turning 18, it’s not just all about the fun plans. Everything changes the moment you turn 18. There are many pros and cons to becoming an adult, for some there are more cons than pros. Some pros are being able to get tattoos and piercings without parental permission, buying lottery tickets, making your own decisions, more job opportunities, voting, buying things, etc. Those are very exciting things but there comes the cons with it. Such as paying taxes, jury duty, full time jobs, paying bills, etc. I am excited to become more independent but I am not ready to go to the dentist by myself. I already make my own doctor appointments and I go by myself but going to the dentist by yourself is a different experience. Being fully responsible for myself is a scary thing too but I am ready for it.
You only turn 18 once, so I am not going to take this special birthday for granted. It’s a new chapter in my life and I have been waiting for this day for a very long time. The three things I am most excited for are getting my tattoo, going to the Cheesecake Factory, and spending my 18th birthday with my twin brother. Some advice I would give to teenagers is don’t take your teen years for granted. Have fun and make the best memories because the second you turn 18, reality sets in.
