The month of October is a unique month for many around the world. Not only is it the start of fall and Halloween but it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual event helps educate those who don’t have much knowledge on the disease. Breast Cancer is a type of cancer that starts as a growth of the cells in the breast tissue. This usually occurs in women but can occur in men as well. It’s rare for men to develop breast cancer but it’s not impossible. This event is an international health campaign that occurs every October. 

This event goes back all the way to 1985, when the American Cancer Society would hold a week-long campaign. Through the years, the campaign grew and went from a week long to a month long. The pink ribbon became a symbol of breast cancer in 1992 when Alexandra Penney, Evelyn Lauder, and a survivor circulated pink ribbons after the second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The particular day in October that holds the Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness is October 13th. 

The two symbols that represent Breast Cancer Awareness Month are the pink ribbon and the color pink in general. The pink ribbon is worn to represent breast cancer and brings awareness to the cancer. The pink ribbons were given out in 1992 and have been the pure symbol of breast cancer. The color pink is the original way to show your awareness. Pink is worn all through the month of October. Especially at sporting events at all levels.
