The Best and Worst Outfits from the Met Gala 2023

Billie Eilish on the Met Gala carpet
The Met Gala occurred a couple of days ago and I have a lot of takes on this year’s outfits. To give you some background, this year’s theme was in honor of Karl Lagerfeld who passed away in 2019. Karl Lagerfeld was the creative director for Chanel from 1983 until his death. He oversaw pretty much everything and was instrumental in revitalizing Chanel’s Brand. He also helped them become one of the top fashion houses in the world. He has had a lot of controversy over the years for being fatphobic, opposing the Me Too movement, being islamophobia, etc. However, that didn’t stop the Met Gala from having him as this year’s theme. Some celebrities nailed the theme while others left me a little confused. This year’s fashion also felt like a hodgepodge of random outfits such as Jared Leto’s Cat Costume which was in honor of Karl Lagerfeld’s cat. Now that you know some background of the event let’s dive into the outfits.
- Dua Lipa
I have very mixed feelings about Dua Lipa’s look at the Met. I really loved the fact that she was extremely on theme with the dress being a Chanel gown styled after the model Claudia Schiffer donned in 1992. I also really loved her necklace which was from Tiffany and weighed 100 carats which makes the necklace extremely expensive. The necklace was absolutely beautiful. However, the dress is just extremely plain and there’s not much to it. And yes, she nailed the theme, I just wish she did something more with it.
- Jared Leto
I’m pretty sure everyone has seen Jared Leto’s costume at the Met Gala by now. I wasn’t the hugest fan of this outfit as he was pretty much just in a cat costume. His outfit was extremely bizarre and very interesting. However, it did look like Karl Lagerfeld’s cat and he was on theme so I got to give him that.
-
Janelle Monáe
I know Janelle got quite a bit of hate for this outfit, however, I think her idea was absolutely brilliant. I love celebrities putting on a performance with their outfits and that is just what Janelle did. Her outfit started off as very bulky but when they started to remove pieces of the outfit it turned into this gorgeous sheer dress with a bikini underneath. I really loved the detail that went into this outfit and the performance it allowed for.
- Billie Eilish
I really loved Billie Eilish’s look at the Met as well. Her dress was beautiful and the design was so intricate. I loved all the lace and the beading that went into this dress. I also think the gloves made a really cool and interesting touch to the dress as it definitely pulls everything together. I also loved how it wasn’t super over the top like others, but it for sure made a statement.
- Kim Kardashian
I also have mixed feelings about Kim Kardashian’s look at the Met. Overall, I think it’s a beautiful dress and the designer Schiaparelli is an amazing designer. I really love all of the draped beading, however, I wish there was beading in the middle of the dress as well. I think if the whole dress was beaded it would have looked really cool. The missing beads in the middle made the stomach part of the dress look a little underwhelming and random.
- Lil Nas X
I have VERY mixed feelings about this outfit. He definitely had one of the more show-stopping outfits, however, there’s just something that I’m not a huge fan of. His outfit was mostly body paint, pearls, beads, etc. I think I’m not a huge fan of the outfit because there really wasn’t any outfit to begin with. Like many other celebrities, went in honor of Lagerfeld’s cat. I will say he does have a ton of dedication for being able to sit through everything getting put on him.
Overall, I would say this year’s Met Gala was a pretty big success. There were some outfits that were definitely gorgeous in my opinion and some that kind of lacked. I’m really curious to see next year’s theme and what celebrities decide to do with that. Which celebrity outfit do you like the best?
