The Not So Surprising Winners from the People's Choice Awards

Emily Eigenbrode

The 47th annual E! People’s Choice Awards occurred last week in a two hour ceremony from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California that was hosted by actor and comedian Kenan Thompson who is most well known for being a long lasting cast member of SNL. Several TV shows and movies had multiple nominations and were expected to sweep the night. Some of the tv shows that had multiple nominations were NBC’s This is US which led the pack with six nominations in five categories, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, Disney+ Loki and WandaVision, NBC’s Law & Order: SUV, and Netflix’s Outer Banks, all with four nominations a piece.

Even though some TV shows did sweep the board with nominations there were a few first time nominees this year which included The Equalizer, CW’s Superman and Lois, Young Rock, White Lotus, Squid Game, Shadow and Bone, The Upshaws, WandaVision, Loki, and Mare of Easttown.

Top Honorees of the Night

The top four honorees of the night were Halle Berry receiving the Icon of 2021 Award, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson got the People’s Champion Award where he then passed on his award to a Make-A-Wish recipient, who attended the PCA’s through the foundation. The Fashion Icon Award was accepted by Kim Kardashian West, who gave a shout out to her ex husband Kanye West crediting him for her interest in fashion. Adding him in this speech was a surprise to many as she is getting divorced from him, so obviously it seems that Kim and Kayne aren’t on the worst of terms. Finally Christina Aguilera was honored with PCA’s first ever Music Icon Award. After the acceptance, she delivered a show stopping performance with her biggest hits including “Genie In a Bottle,” “Stronger,” and “Beautiful”.
