Goodbye 2021, Hello 2022: New Movies Coming to a Theater Near You
December 15, 2021
As the year comes to an end, the movies just keep coming. There are many movies for the holiday season ranging from movie musicals, to sci-fi, to action, to romance. As someone who currently works at an AMC, I know about the endless movies that are soon to be released. In this article, I would like to discuss some of the most anticipated movies for audiences to come out in December 2021 and into January 2022.
Starting off the month, the remake of the movie musical West Side Story is to be released December 10th. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the musical stars Ansel Elgort from movies The Fault in Our Stars and Divergent alongside Rachel Zeglar, an upcoming actress in the movie industry. A modern retelling of the classic play Romeo and Juliet, it follows the story of Tony and Maria who fall in love despite having affiliations with rival street gangs, the Jets and Sharks. Set in 1950s New York City, West Side Story is a tale of romance, gangs, and race which strikes the hearts of many musical theater lovers on a daily basis. This movie remake is in celebration of the 50 year anniversary of the classic musical which has already stunned and amazed audiences around the world.
To continue, December 17th brings to light the third Spider-Man movie in the modern Spider-Man franchise Spider-Man: No Way Home. Not much is needed to be said about this third movie to the Spider-Man series. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is working with Dr. Strange to erase the memory of the world of his identity. Peter realizes that this means Ned, Mj, and Aunt May will all forget and obviously doesn’t want that, so he tries to stop Dr. Strange. Consequently, Spider-Man villains from all universes begin to enter the world that we now know and love. From William Defoe’s Green Goblin to Alfred Monila’s Dr. Otto Octavius, Spider-Man is now facing villains and challenges he has never faced before.
On December 22nd, three anticipated movies are going to be released all on the same day. There is Sing 2, The King’s Man, and The Matrix Resurrections. Sing 2 is a sequel to the beloved Sing and follows the story of the same characters performing and trying to sing. New characters are added and new people join the spotlight as every single person is trying to make a performance of a lifetime. AMC Theaters in celebration of the movie’s release have been offering a “Sing Snack Pack” which for $30 gives the buyer a large popcorn, two large drinks, and two candies of their choice. In addition to Sing 2, The King’s Man is to be released the same day. A prequel to the well loved Kingsman franchise shines a new light to the characters. It gives back the story to the creation of the Kingsman and how World War II influenced the group. Finally, The Matrix Resurrections is a sequel to another well known and loved franchise, The Matrix. Starring Keanu Reeves, The Matrix Resurrections has given little insight as to what the movie will have to offer for the series. Highly anticipated, people are still planning to watch and hopefully love the new addition to the iconic series.
Beginning the new year, on January 7th the girl-power movie The 355 is being released. Starring Jessica Chastain, The 355 is about top secret spies from around the world who come together to stop a group of people who obtained a highly dangerous, top secret weapon. With mainly female leads, many people are excited to see a movie not only showing the power of women, but also the power of many diverse women. Not much has been released about this movie other than the cast, and a mild understanding of the plot. All in all, it is still a movie that will kick us off into the new year.
Finally, the last movie that I will discuss is the release of Peter Dinklage’s new movie, Cyrano. To be released on January 21st, Cyrano follows the story of a man who believes that his physical appearance doesn’t allow him to date and marry the woman of his dreams. Instead of telling her, he writes to her through letters without stating that it is him, Cyrano. Looking like it is another movie musical, the singing and dancing seems like it is something to be excited about seeing in theaters.
In conclusion, these are just a few of the movies that are going to be ending out 2021 and beginning the 2022 year. Much like many people, I am extremely excited for these movies and hope to see many people going to watch them.
