While many people know the holiday season to be the time of giving, we tend forget one special person – Mother Nature! She feeds us, warms us up, cools us down, and even gives us oxygen. However, sometimes we forget that we need to take care of her as much as she takes care of us.

With all of the littering and pollution, animals, plants, and even humans are dying. Let’s do nature a favor and clean up our problems. here are some earth friendly tips you can use this holiday season.

Tip 1: Go thrift shopping

Thrift shopping is an interesting way to buy clothes that are unique and nice as well. Many people feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to wear second-hand clothes. However, by thrift shopping you reduce waste and pollution.

The Huffington Post says,“The average American will toss out 81 pounds of clothing this year.” If you total that average for every household in America, it will add up to 26 billion pounds of textiles and clothing in landfills.

According to sophomore Jayden Pratt, “ [Thrifting] is super convenient and some of the clothes are actually pretty rad.”

You know what they say: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” So, go find your treasure.

Tip 2: Invest in a reusable bag

According to National Geographic, about 18 billion pounds of plastic waste flows into oceans every year from coastal regions. This number can easily be reduced by ditching plastic bags and investing in a reusable bag or lunch box.

Sophomore Ally Sanchez proudly carries her ‘Go green’ bag campaigned by University of Denver. “I love using this bag because it saves me time in the morning so I don’t have to find a grocery bag, and it helps the planet, which I love.”

Tip 3: Get creative with the decorations

Instead of buying new decorations, reuse last years or make some! Making your own decorations adds a special unique twist to the decoration.

Not only does it help reduce packaging and factory fumes, but it also saves you money. According to the National Retail Federation, Americans spend roughly $680 billion during the holiday season. Reduce this cost by getting creative and DIY your Christmas.
